Internships at BBBSG

Continuing with our mission to mentor

Continuing with our mission to mentor, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph has various practicum placements and internships available throughout the year. Training programs are offered in casework, event planning, grant writing and marketing & communications. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact us via the info at the bottom of this page.

The main focus of these internships is identify the skills the intern is wanting to develop, and then matching these skills with the needs of the agency. At the conclusion of the internship experience, we provide an evaluation of the your responsibilities and your ability to perform them in a professional manner, as indicated by ability to arrive on time, meet deadlines, take initiative in learning, interact with supervisors and colleagues, develop a work plan and develop skills identified by that work plan, and present a written summary of the internship learning experience. As an intern, you may keep a copy of your projects, to add to your work portfolio to gain employment.



Jess250In July 2013, we were fortunate enough to have Jessica Gabla join our fund development team for a six-month internship. A graduate of Ryerson University’s Fundraising Management course, Jessica’s main task was to plan and implement a brand new fundraising event, The Big Little Run.

Jessica did a tremendous job with this initiative, and became well-known throughout the community as the Race Director. She is extremely grateful for the opportunity she had here to “gain the armload of practical skills” she now has. 

Darryl250We also welcomed Darryl Blake, who had a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University.

Darryl's internship with us ran from January-April 2014. Darryl's efforts were focused on submitting grant proposals and assisting with other writing projects, including preparing our agency for National Accreditation in September 2014. Darryl was a great addition to the BBBSG team!

kerstenMost recently, we welcomed Kersten Dupuis to intern with our Fund Development team from January-June 2016. Kersten came to us from Ryerson University with a bachelors degree in Politics & Governance, and a minor in Voluntary Sector Management. Kersten worked alongside our development and communications staff, writing grants, acquiring sponsorship and planning the 2016 Big Little Run, which enjoyed its most successful results yet! She found that applying her education in the workplace and expanding her knowledge through experience was extremely rewarding.

"The staff at BBBSG were so supportive and helpful, and always willing to teach me new things," she said. "I will definitely take the abilities and insight that I learned in those six months onto all other jobs and careers that I pursue in the future."

Thanks for all your help and hard work, Kersten. You were a great asset to our team!

Requirements
Applicants must:

  • Demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and follow-through skills
  • Be familiar with Microsoft Office programs
  • Have prior experience/education in event planning, fundraising, marketing or communications
  • Have reliable transportation to BBBSG
  • Provide a Vulnerable Sector Police Check
